How to do the Water Aerobics
Water aerobics is a low-impact conditioning workout done in a swimming pool. It trains your whole body and gets your heart rate up while the water supports your body weight and cushions your joints.
Stand in chest-deep water with your feet about shoulder-width apart and your posture tall. Use the pool rail or wall for balance when entering and exiting, and make sure your feet can still touch the bottom firmly.
Start marching in place, swinging your arms naturally as you step. From there, move forward, backward, or side to side across the pool. Keep a steady rhythm and stay in motion the whole time, working at a pace where you can still hold a conversation.
Breathe normally and keep your core gently engaged. To make it easier, slow your pace or hold the pool wall for light support. To make it harder, push your arms through the water with more intent or lift your knees a little higher.
Coaching cues
- Water supports the joints while adding gentle resistance
- Stay in chest-deep water for stability
- Move continuously at a talk-test pace
Common faults & fixes
Fault: Wading into water that is too deep and feeling unstable. Fix: Stay in chest-deep water so your feet stay planted and your upper body remains supported and balanced.
Fault: Holding your breath or speeding up until you cannot talk. Fix: Move continuously at a talk-test pace and breathe steadily throughout the session.
Fault: Stopping frequently or gripping the wall for the entire workout. Fix: Use the rail only when entering, exiting, or regaining balance, and keep the rest of your body moving with a consistent rhythm.
Cautions
Use Rails Entering And Exiting The Pool — Wet Surfaces Are A Fall Hazard · Avoid Heated Pools — Overheating Risk. If any of these apply to you, scale or substitute - a coach can program around them.
