How to do the 1000m BikeErg
The 1000m BikeErg is a one-kilometer ride on a stationary fan bike. It builds conditioning and leg endurance, with your quadriceps and glutes doing most of the work and your hamstrings and calves helping out.
Set the seat height so your leg has only a slight bend when the pedal is at its lowest point. Strap or clip your feet in securely, sit tall on the seat, and grip the handlebars lightly with your arms slightly bent. Keep your eyes forward and your shoulders relaxed.
Begin pedaling with an easy, smooth circular stroke. Push through your whole foot rather than just stomping down. Once you are warm, add the arm push-pull to share the work between your legs and upper body. Settle into a steady pace and aim to hold roughly the same split or time per meter for the full 1000 meters.
Breathe in a steady rhythm and keep your core gently braced so your torso stays solid. To make it easier, slow your cadence or pause briefly whenever needed. To make it harder, maintain a faster, consistent pace for the entire distance.
Coaching cues
- Smooth circular stroke, add the arm push-pull
- Hold a steady pace/split for the distance
Common faults & fixes
Fault: Pedaling in choppy, stomping strokes instead of a smooth circle. Fix: Think about pushing across the top and pulling across the bottom of each pedal stroke so the motion stays fluid.
Fault: Arms staying stiff or simply holding the handlebars without adding power. Fix: Once you have a rhythm, add the arm push-pull so your arms help drive the handle forward and pull it back each stroke.
Fault: Going out too fast and then slowing way down. Fix: Hold a steady pace or split from the start, and if anything, try to ride the second half at the same speed or slightly faster than the first.
Fault: Seat set too low or too high, which can make the stroke feel awkward. Fix: Adjust the seat so your knee keeps a small, comfortable bend at the bottom of the pedal stroke.
