How to do the Technical Terrain Run
A Technical Terrain Run is trail running over uneven ground - rocks, roots, loose dirt, or scree - done at a controlled, conversational pace. It trains your legs, feet, and balance to handle real-world footing while building uphill and downhill conditioning.
Wear trail shoes with good grip and start on terrain that matches the goal race. Stand tall, relax your shoulders, and look 3–5 meters down the trail. Keep your arms free at your sides, or hold poles if you use them for balance and support.
Run at a sustainable pace you can hold. Scan the trail early and pick your line before you reach each obstacle. Shorten your stride on rough sections, vary your foot-strike - forefoot, midfoot, or heel depending on the slope - and stay light on your feet. Drive through your glutes and quads on climbs, and let your hips and calves control the descent.
Breathe in a steady rhythm you can talk through, and keep your core gently braced so your torso stays stable when a foot shifts. To make it easier, choose smoother trails, slow down, or use poles. To make it harder, add steeper pitches, rockier ground, or leave the poles behind and rely only on your balance.

Common faults & fixes
Fault: Staring straight down at your feet. Fix: Look 3–5 meters ahead, scanning for rocks and roots so you can plan your line early.
Fault: Overstriding on technical sections. Fix: Shorten your stride, quicken your steps, and land softly underneath your hips.
Fault: Running rocky or loose ground when your ankles feel unstable. Fix: Pick smoother trails while you build ankle strength and balance, and save the technical terrain for when you feel solid and confident.
Fault: Turning the run into a speed session instead of blending it with the long run. Fix: Keep the effort conversational and treat this as part of your long run rather than a separate hard workout.
Cautions
Ankle Sprain Is The Most Common Acute Trail Injury — Avoid Technical Ground During Ankle Instability. If any of these apply to you, scale or substitute - a coach can program around them.
