How to do the 1000m Run
The 1000m run is a middle-distance conditioning effort that builds leg endurance and aerobic power. It mainly works your quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes, while your calves and core stabilize each stride and keep you upright.
Start standing tall with your feet under your hips, shoulders relaxed, and eyes looking straight ahead. Bend your elbows to about 90 degrees and keep your hands loose - no clenched fists.
Begin with easy strides and let your speed settle into a steady pace you can hold. Keep a tall, relaxed posture, land under your hips with a quick cadence, and drive your arms forward and back without crossing them over your chest. If you are coming out of a HYROX station, control the first 100m instead of sprinting out, then settle into a strong, even effort all the way to the finish.
Breathe in a steady rhythm through your nose and mouth, and keep your midsection gently braced so your torso does not collapse forward. To make it easier, break the distance into run-walk intervals or shorten the total distance. To make it harder, run the second half faster than the first on a slight incline or hold a quicker steady cadence.
Coaching cues
- Relaxed tall posture with a quick cadence
- In HYROX this is run on fatigued legs — control the first 100m out of each station
- Even pacing beats going out hot and fading
Common faults & fixes
Fault: Going out too hard and fading before the halfway mark. Fix: Start at a pace you can speak in short sentences and hold it; even pacing beats going out hot and fading.
Fault: Overstriding and landing with your foot far in front of your body. Fix: Take shorter, quicker steps and land under your hips, using the quick-cadence cue.
Fault: Tensing the shoulders, neck, or hands. Fix: Drop your shoulders, loosen your grip, and return to a relaxed tall posture from head to toe.
Fault: Leaning back or sitting too far behind your hips. Fix: Hinge slightly forward from the ankles, keep your eyes up, and brace your core so your body stays stacked over each stride.
