How to do the Dumbbell Farmer Carry

The dumbbell farmer carry is a walking exercise where you hold a dumbbell in each hand and march for distance or time. It builds grip strength, core stability, and posture while training your body to stay upright under load.

Start standing with a dumbbell at each side, feet about hip-width apart. Hinge at the hips and bend your knees slightly to pick up the weights. Stand tall with your arms straight down, shoulders over hips, and eyes looking forward.

Begin walking with short, controlled steps. Keep the dumbbells close to your legs without letting them swing forward or hit your thighs. Maintain an upright torso, keep your shoulders level, and let your arms hang naturally as you move.

Breathe steadily through your nose and mouth, keeping your ribs down and your midsection braced as if someone were about to poke you in the stomach. To make it easier, use lighter dumbbells or walk a shorter distance. To make it harder, walk farther or hold the dumbbells with a firmer grip for longer.

Common faults & fixes

Fault: Leaning back or arching the lower back. Fix: Pull your ribs down, squeeze your glutes gently, and keep your body in a straight line from ears to ankles.

Fault: Shrugging the shoulders toward the ears. Fix: Relax your neck, draw your shoulder blades down and back, and imagine creating length through your neck.

Fault: Letting the dumbbells drift out to the sides or swing. Fix: Keep the weights close to your body and take smaller steps so they stay under control on every stride.

Fault: Holding the breath or breathing shallowly. Fix: Inhale before you start, then breathe steadily as you walk while keeping your midsection engaged.
