How to do the 2000m BikeErg

The 2000m BikeErg is a fixed-distance conditioning effort on a stationary air bike with a spinning flywheel. It trains your quads and glutes as the main drivers, with your hamstrings and calves helping through each pedal stroke, while also challenging your breathing and pacing control.

Set the BikeErg on a flat, stable surface and adjust the seat so your knee has a slight bend at the bottom of the pedal stroke. Sit back on the saddle, place the balls of your feet on the pedals, and grip the handles lightly. Set the damper to a setting that lets you keep your legs moving without locking up.

Start by building the pace with smooth, circular strokes. Push down through the ball of the foot, sweep back, pull up, and then drive forward again without pausing. As you settle in, add the arm push-pull so your arms and legs work together. Your goal is to hold a steady pace or split across the full 2000 meters rather than sprinting and fading.

Breathe in rhythm with your stroke and keep your core gently braced so your upper body stays calm. To make it easier, lower the damper setting or cut the distance in half and build up over time. To make it harder, raise the damper slightly or aim to hold a faster steady split for the entire distance.

Coaching cues

  • Smooth circular stroke, add the arm push-pull
  • Hold a steady pace/split for the distance

Common faults & fixes

Fault: Mashing the pedals with stiff, choppy strokes. Fix: Pedal in smooth circles, pushing down and pulling up evenly so your quads and glutes stay in rhythm rather than burning out early.

Fault: Arms pulling hard while the legs do almost nothing. Fix: Let your legs drive most of the stroke and add the arm push-pull as a light, connected assist.

Fault: Going out too fast and watching the split slow down in the second half. Fix: Start at a pace you can hold, then try to keep the same split or slightly negative split the last 500 meters.
