How to do the Transition Practice (T1/T2)

Transition Practice is a skill drill for the two switches in a triathlon: T1 is swim to bike, and T2 is bike to run. It trains you to move from one discipline to the next smoothly, calmly, and without wasting energy or time.

Set up a small transition area on grass or pavement. Lay out your gear in the order you will use it: bike shoes and helmet first, then sunglasses and race number, then run shoes and hat. Place your bike on a rack or lean it safely with the front wheel pointed toward the exit. Stand at your entry spot as if you just finished the swim or the bike leg.

Walk through the exact sequence first. For T1, pull your wetsuit down to your waist, run to your bike, put on and fasten your helmet before you touch the bike, grab it, and roll to the mount line. For T2, stop or dismount before the line, rack the bike, remove your helmet, step into your run shoes, grab your number, and go. Once the order feels smooth, repeat it at a jog and then at a faster pace. Rehearse mount and dismount lines at low speed first.

Breathe steadily through each step; rushing usually makes you fumble. Keep your core lightly braced when you bend to pull on shoes or lift the bike. To make it easier, do each transition as a slow walk-through and pause between steps. To make it harder, do a short hard swim or bike effort right before the transition so you practice switching while your heart rate is up.

Coaching cues

  • Lay out gear in race order and rehearse the exact sequence
  • Practice wetsuit strip and helmet-first rule
  • Rehearse mount/dismount lines at low speed first

Common faults & fixes

Fault: You grab or rack the bike before your helmet is on and fastened. Fix: Make helmet-first a non-negotiable step every rep; click the strap before your hands touch the bike.

Fault: Gear is scattered or in a different spot each time, so you search instead of moving. Fix: Lay out gear in race order and rehearse the exact same layout every practice, so your hands know where to go.

Fault: You try to mount or dismount at full speed before the movement feels automatic. Fix: Rehearse the mount and dismount lines at low speed first until the steps are smooth, then gradually add speed.
