How to do the Reaction Ball Drill
The Reaction Ball Drill is a quick bodyweight agility drill. It trains your ability to read a cue, change direction, and drop into a ready position - useful for any sport or activity that asks you to react on the spot.
Start standing with your feet about shoulder-width apart and your knees slightly bent. Keep your chest up, eyes forward, and your arms relaxed in front of your chest with elbows bent, like you are ready to catch something. Give yourself a few feet of open space in every direction.
Your partner, coach, or a timer calls out or signals a direction - left, right, forward, or down. As soon as you get the cue, take one quick step or shuffle that way and lower your hips into an athletic stance. Keep your chest facing forward and your hands out in front. Reset quickly to the start and wait for the next cue. Repeat for short bursts, moving as fast as you can while staying in control.
Breathe naturally and keep a light brace through your midsection so you stay tall and balanced. To make it easier, slow the cues down or limit the drill to two directions. To make it harder, speed up the cues, add a second movement after the first, or react to a sound instead of a visual signal.
Common faults & fixes
Fault: You reach or lean with your upper body instead of moving your feet. Fix: Take a real step or shuffle every time; let your legs close the gap while your hands stay ready.
Fault: You stand straight up or lock your knees between reps. Fix: Stay in a slight athletic bend with soft knees so you can push off in any direction without an extra wind-up.
Fault: You look down or freeze after the first move. Fix: Keep your eyes up and reset quickly to your start position so you are ready for the next cue.
Fault: You overcommit and lose balance on the lowering part. Fix: Move only as far as you can control, then stop with your feet under your hips before you reset.
