How to do the Project Climbing
Project Climbing is a skill session on a climbing wall. It trains your forearm flexors, lats, and core while your shoulders and glutes support each move. The goal is to solve a sequence of holds and movements rather than just pull hard.
Start on the ground facing the wall. Place your hands and feet on the starting holds the problem calls for. Keep your hips close to the wall, eyes on the next hold, and your whole body engaged before you leave the ground.
Move one limb at a time. Shift your weight over a foot before you reach. Use your legs to push you upward and your arms mainly to balance and pull when needed. Stop and reset on a good hold if you feel your form fall apart.
Breathe steadily throughout each attempt. Brace your core just before any big reach or unstable position. To make it easier, practice the bottom half first or use larger footholds. To make it harder, try smoother transitions or limit the number of attempts.
Coaching cues
- Break the climb into sections and rehearse cruxes
- Take long, full rests between attempts
- Refine beta each attempt rather than pulling harder
Common faults & fixes
Fault: Pulling harder every time a move fails. Fix: Step off the wall, look at the hold placement, and change your foot or hand sequence before the next try.
Fault: Taking short rests and climbing until your grip gives out. Fix: Rest long enough between attempts so your forearms recover and each try is clean.
Fault: Repeatedly throwing for a small hold when tired. Fix: End the session or switch to larger holds, because dynamic catches on small edges stress your finger pulleys.
Cautions
Avoid Repeated Dynamic Attempts On Small Holds When Fatigued — Pulley Risk. If any of these apply to you, scale or substitute - a coach can program around them.
