Progressive Boulder Problems - demonstration

How to do the Progressive Boulder Problems

Progressive Boulder Problems are a short series of climbing routes, or "problems," that start easy and get slightly harder as you move through them. They are used as a warm-up or cool-down while you practice movement, balance, footwork, and reading the wall. Because you use only your bodyweight, the focus is on clean, controlled movement rather than strength.

Start at the base of a bouldering wall with a padded floor beneath you. Stand square to the wall with your hips close in and reach up to the starting holds with both hands. Place your feet on good footholds, keep your arms slightly bent, and let your shoulders relax away from your ears.

Climb the first problem using slow, deliberate moves. Move one limb at a time, set your feet before you pull, and keep your hips over your feet when you can. Rest briefly at the top or at the finish hold, then step or down-climb carefully back to the ground. Move on to the next problem, which should feel a little more complex or use smaller holds, and repeat the same controlled approach.

Breathe steadily throughout each problem: exhale as you reach or shift your weight, and keep a light brace through your midsection so your whole body stays connected. To make it easier, choose problems with bigger holds and a more upright wall. To make it harder, pick problems with smaller holds, a steeper wall, or fewer resting positions.

Common faults & fixes

Fault: You rush through the moves and swing around on the holds. Fix: Pause on each hold, set your feet, and move only when you feel balanced and in control.

Fault: You hang with your arms fully straight or pulled in tight to your chest. Fix: Keep a soft bend in your elbows and let your legs carry most of your weight.

Fault: Your feet cut away from the wall on every move. Fix: Push through your toes, keep your hips close to the wall, and step up before you pull with your hands.

Fault: You skip the easy problems and jump straight to the hardest ones. Fix: Start well below your limit and make each problem only slightly harder so your movement and body temperature build gradually.
