Hand Gripper - demonstration

How to do the Hand Gripper

A hand gripper is a small spring-loaded device that strengthens your grip and forearm flexors by making you squeeze two handles together. It is a unilateral exercise, so you work one hand at a time.

Sit or stand tall with your wrist in a neutral position, not bent sharply back or forward. Hold the gripper with one hand, placing the handle across your palm and wrapping your fingers around the other handle. Set your thumb on the opposite side so your hand can fully close the device.

Squeeze the handles together until they touch or until you reach a full close for that gripper. Pause briefly at the bottom of the close, then release under control and let the spring open your hand fully. Repeat for the target reps, then switch hands.

Breathe normally and avoid holding your breath. To make it easier, choose a lighter gripper or perform partial closes through a comfortable range. To make it harder, add timed holds at the fully closed position, mixing max closes with holds. Train both hands evenly, and skip extra grip work on days when your fingers ache from heavy gi or grappling training.

Coaching cues

  • full close every rep
  • mix max closes and timed holds
  • train both hands evenly

Common faults & fixes

Fault: Stopping the rep before the handles touch. Fix: Aim for a full close every rep; if you cannot close it fully, switch to a lighter gripper or save partial reps only for the very end of a set.

Fault: Only doing fast, touch-and-go reps. Fix: Mix max closes with timed holds so you build strength through the entire squeeze instead of relying on momentum.

Fault: Training one hand much more than the other. Fix: Match the sets, reps, and holds on both hands, and start with your weaker side first.

Cautions

High Finger Joint Stress — Avoid Stacking On Days With Heavy Gi Work If Fingers Ache. If any of these apply to you, scale or substitute - a coach can program around them.
