Band Finger Extensions - demonstration

How to do the Band Finger Extensions

Band finger extensions are a small, targeted hand exercise. You open your fingers against a resistance band to strengthen the muscles that straighten and spread your fingers and thumb. This helps balance out all the gripping work your hands do.

Sit or stand tall with your wrist straight. Slide a thin band over the pads of your four fingers and thumb, near the fingernails. Start with your fingers curled into a loose fist so the band is gently stretched. Do one hand at a time, resting your forearm on your thigh or a table if that helps keep your wrist still.

Press your fingers outward and away from each other, opening your hand as wide as you can against the band. Pause briefly in the fully open position. Then slowly let the band pull your fingers back into a loose fist. Keep the motion smooth and controlled all the way through.

Breathe normally and keep your wrist neutral, not bent backward. Use a thinner band or place it closer to your fingertips to make it easier. Use a thicker band or place it lower toward your knuckles to make it harder. This exercise is usually done for higher reps. Stop if it hurts, and get a professional evaluation if hand pain keeps returning.

Coaching cues

  • Open the fingers fully against the band
  • Slow open, slow close
  • High reps as antagonist balance for all the gripping

Common faults & fixes

Fault: Snapping the fingers open and letting them snap shut. Fix: Move slowly in both directions. Take a couple of seconds to open and a couple of seconds to close.

Fault: Bending the wrist backward to help open the fingers. Fix: Keep your wrist straight and still. Only your fingers and thumb should move.

Fault: Not opening the hand fully. Fix: Spread and straighten your fingers as far as the band allows each rep. Finish the open position before you close.

Cautions

Stop If Painful; Persistent Hand Pain Needs Professional Evaluation. If any of these apply to you, scale or substitute - a coach can program around them.
