How to do the Falling Card Catch
The Falling Card Catch is a reaction and coordination drill. You drop a playing card and try to grab it before it hits the ground. It trains hand-eye coordination, focus, and quick hands.
Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart. Hold a playing card at shoulder height or slightly above, pinched between your thumb and fingers. Keep your free hand relaxed and ready at your side.
Release the card so it falls straight down. As soon as it drops, reach with your catching hand and grab it cleanly before it lands. Avoid swatting or trapping it against your body. Switch hands each rep.
Breathe normally and keep your shoulders loose. Easier: drop the card from chest height. Harder: drop it from overhead or catch with your non-dominant hand.
Common faults & fixes
Fault: Snatching at the card with a stiff arm. Fix: Keep your wrist and elbow soft; track the card with your eyes first, then reach smoothly.
Fault: The card drifts away from you and out of reach. Fix: Release it straight down from the same spot each time, holding the card flat and level.
Fault: Looking at the floor before letting go. Fix: Keep your eyes on the card as you release it; your hand will follow your gaze.
