How to do the Color-Shape Reaction Drill
The Color-Shape Reaction Drill is a quick-thinking movement drill. It trains your ability to read a visual signal and move in the right direction without hesitation.
Stand facing a wall or partner with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Place colored markers or shape cards on the floor around you, or have a partner hold them up. Keep your knees slightly bent and your weight on the balls of your feet.
Wait for the signal. When you see a color or shape, move to the matching marker or perform the assigned action as fast as you can. Reset to your start position after each rep. Repeat with different signals in random order.
Breathe naturally and keep your shoulders relaxed. To make it easier, use only two colors and slow down the calls. To make it harder, add more colors or shapes and speed up the calls.
Common faults & fixes
Fault: You freeze or start moving before the signal appears. Fix: Keep your eyes on the signal source and react only after you clearly see the color or shape.
Fault: You take extra shuffle steps before committing to a direction. Fix: Push off evenly from both feet and move straight toward the target.
Fault: You lean too far forward and lose your balance. Fix: Keep a small bend in your knees and your chest upright while you wait and while you move.
