How to do the Campus Board Ladders
Campus board ladders are an advanced plyometric climbing drill where you move up a campus board hand-over-hand without using your feet. They train explosive pulling power, finger contact strength, and the coordination to generate force quickly through the arms, upper back, and forearms.
This drill is for advanced climbers with at least five years of climbing base, strong fingers, and healthy elbows only. Use a campus board with large rungs. Start from a hanging position with both hands on the bottom rung, arms fully extended, shoulders engaged, and feet off the ground.
Pull hard through one arm to reach the next rung above with the opposite hand. Catch the rung, briefly control it, then pull again to place the trailing hand on the next rung. Continue moving hand-over-hand up the board in a ladder pattern, never matching or using your feet.
Exhale as you pull and reach, and keep your core tight so your body does not swing. To make it easier, use bigger rungs or shorten the distance between reaches. To make it harder, use smaller rungs or increase the spacing while still keeping every rep crisp.
Coaching cues
- Move hand-over-hand up large rungs without feet
- Full recovery between efforts — quality over volume
- Stop the moment contact strength degrades
Common faults & fixes
Fault: Letting the shoulders sag or hanging with passive arms. Fix: Keep your shoulders down and active, not shrugged to your ears, before each pull.
Fault: Reaching with a bent elbow to avoid starting from full extension. Fix: Begin from a straight-arm hang and generate the reach from the shoulder, back, and fingers.
Fault: Continuing after catches get sloppy or fingers feel weaker. Fix: Stop the moment contact strength degrades; do not train through fatigue.
Fault: Doing rep after rep with short rests to build volume. Fix: Take full recovery between efforts so each attempt stays fast, clean, and high quality.
