Never grind an Olympic lift
August 1, 2026
In most strength sports, grinding a rep is a badge of honor. In weightlifting, it's a broken rep teaching a broken pattern. An Olympic lift is a speed skill — snatch or clean muscled slowly to the top is practice at being slow.
So the rule here is the sport's own: an Olympic lift is never ground out. Sets stay short and crisp; the bar stays fast; misses end the climb.
Where the volume actually goes
If the classic lifts stay at doubles and singles, where does the work that makes you stronger happen? The pulls and the squats — snatch pull, clean pull, back squat, front squat — loaded up with the volume, because they build the strength the lifts express without spending the technique.
That's the split: skill work rehearsed fresh and fast, strength work accumulated heavy and honest. Each does its own job; neither sabotages the other.
Bar speed is the coach
When the bar slows, the session's message is over — more reps would only groove the slow version. Crisp doubles at 75% teach more than grinding fives ever will.
Fast bar first. Big numbers follow — that's the order, and it doesn't run backwards.
