Torso Rotation Machine - demonstration

How to do the Torso Rotation Machine

The torso rotation machine is a seated or kneeling strength machine that trains your ability to twist through your trunk. It mainly targets your obliques, with support from your abdominals.

Set the pin to a light resistance you can control, then sit facing the machine or as directed by the pad markings. Grip the handles with both hands at about chest height, keep your chest up, and let your hips and lower body stay fixed against the pads.

Start from a neutral upright torso. Brace your midsection and rotate your trunk toward one side through a comfortable range. Reverse slowly and under control back through the middle, then rotate to the other side. Move from your trunk, not your arms, and keep each rep smooth rather than jerky.

Exhale as you rotate away from center; inhale as you return. Keep your abs engaged the whole time, but do not hold your breath. To make it easier, reduce the weight and shorten the range; to make it harder, slow the tempo and add only as much range as feels controlled.

Coaching cues

  • Rotate from the trunk, not the arms
  • Move slowly through a comfortable range

Common faults & fixes

Fault: You pull the handles with your arms, turning it into a shoulder exercise. Fix: Think of your hands as hooks; rotate from the trunk and let the arms travel only because your ribs and shoulders are turning.

Fault: You twist too far, rounding or arching your lower back at the end. Fix: Shorten the range so your hips stay planted and your low back stays neutral throughout the movement.

Fault: You swing back and forth using momentum. Fix: Move slowly through a comfortable range, pausing briefly at each side before reversing direction.

Fault: You hold your breath and grip the handles tightly. Fix: Breathe steadily as you rotate, and keep a firm but relaxed grip so the work stays in your midsection.

Cautions

Keep Range Moderate To Protect The Low Back. If any of these apply to you, scale or substitute - a coach can program around them.
