How to do the Standing Dumbbell Overhead Press
The standing dumbbell overhead press is a vertical push where you press a dumbbell in each hand from shoulder height to straight overhead while standing. It builds upper-body pressing strength, works your shoulders and arms, and challenges your core and balance.
Start with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with your palms facing forward or slightly inward, whichever feels better on your wrists. Keep your elbows tucked in front of your torso, not flared straight out to the sides. Pull your ribs down, squeeze your glutes, and look straight ahead.
Press both dumbbells up at the same time. Let the weights travel in a slight arc so they stay close to your face rather than drifting far forward. Lock your arms at the top with the dumbbells stacked directly over your shoulders. Lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height under control, then repeat.
Breathe in at the bottom and brace your core like someone is about to tap your stomach. Press as you breathe out, then breathe in again as you lower the weights. To make it easier, sit on a bench and press from there. To make it harder, stand with your feet closer together or pause for a second at the top of each rep.
Common faults & fixes
Fault: Your lower back arches and your ribs flare at the top of the press. Fix: Squeeze your glutes, keep your ribs pulled down, and finish the lockout with the dumbbells stacked over your shoulders instead of behind them.
Fault: The dumbbells drift forward as you press. Fix: Keep the weights moving in a slight arc close to your face and finish with the dumbbells directly above your shoulders.
Fault: Your elbows flare straight out to the sides during the press. Fix: Start with your elbows slightly in front of your body and keep them under the dumbbells as you drive up.
Fault: You hold your breath or breathe shallowly through the set. Fix: Inhale and brace at the bottom, breathe out during the press, and inhale again as you lower the weights.
