How to do the Light Dumbbell Bench Press

The light dumbbell bench press is a low-intensity pressing movement done on a bench. It wakes up the chest, shoulders, and triceps without heavy loading, making it a useful warmup or cooldown option on pressing days.

Lie flat on a bench with a dumbbell in each hand. Plant your feet on the floor, pull your shoulder blades back and down, and press the weights straight above your chest. Your palms can face toward your feet or slightly toward each other. Keep a soft bend in your elbows at the top.

Lower the dumbbells under control until your upper arms are about level with the bench or you feel a comfortable stretch across your chest. Pause briefly, then press the weights back up until your arms are straight. Move smoothly and avoid bouncing the weights off your chest.

Breathe in as you lower the dumbbells and breathe out as you press them up. Keep your ribs down and your lower back in a neutral position with a small natural gap from the bench. To make it easier, use lighter dumbbells or do the movement on the floor. To make it harder, slow down the lowering phase or add a short pause at the bottom.

Common faults & fixes

Fault: The elbows flare straight out to the sides. Fix: Tuck your elbows slightly toward your ribs so your upper arms form about a 45-degree angle with your torso, which keeps the shoulders in a safer position.

Fault: The lower back arches off the bench. Fix: Press your upper back into the bench, keep your ribs down, and maintain only a small natural gap between your lower back and the bench.

Fault: The dumbbells drift toward your head or hips instead of staying over the chest. Fix: Keep the weights stacked over the chest throughout the rep, lowering them to the middle of your chest and pressing them back along the same line.
